Hardware troubleshooting is the process of reviewing, diagnosing and identifying operational or technical problems within a hardware device or equipment. It aims to resolve physical and/or logical problems and issues within a computing hardware.

To save time and money here some simple troubleshooting that you can do before you bring it to computer expert. Try to solve computer issues by yourself, below is common problems and some possible solutions.

Computer will not start

• Check all cables are plugged in.
• Check if switches turned on.
• Try using another power cable if you have one.
• Change fuse in cable.
• Check extension if using one.
• Try a different known working socket.
• Change power lead.
• Check no buttons or switches are stuck.
• Laptop - Take your battery out and wait for 60 second and then reinsert the battery.
• Laptop - Maybe the battery is empty or drain. You need to recharge it for a while.

Noisy Computer

• If is CPU fan - clean the fan of your CPU. Use brush or air blower to clean it.
• If is HDD head - chances are your hard drive is close to dying. Backup your files while its still working.
• If is PSU fan - Your power supply unit maybe old. Replace your power supply with new one.
• Check if there is something Blocks the smooth action of Fan and causing the fan to make noise.

Computer Overheating

• Most computers are designed to shut down when things get too hot.
• Dying fans - Replace your old fan with new.
• Poor ventilation - Place your computer in open area.
• Heavy use of computer is also can heat up your computer.

Power doesn't come on

• Check the Power from the wall socket.
• Check the Voltage Setting On the CPU.
• Check the Power switch of the Cabinet and Front Panel of MotherBoard.
• Check the Power Supply Connections to the Motherboard.
• Check the SMPS without connecting it to the motherboard, you could see the two wire green and black which you have to short them (using any piece of wire/paper clip) in the 24 pin motherboard connector of the SMPS.

Caution: Do not open the power supply, it contains capacitors that are capable of holding hold electricity even if the computer is off and unplugged for a week, if not longer.

Monitor no display

• Check monitor is correctly connected.
• Check monitor is plugged in and turned on.
• Check connection to computer is not loose.

Speaker no sound

• Check that your speakers are on and plugged in.
• Check that the speaker is connected to the right port.
• Check if the sound is muted.
• Check the volume is turned up.
• Check the sound driver if is installed or missing.
• If the sound driver is missing try to reinstall it.
• Try using another speaker if you have one.

Mouse and Keyboard won't work

• Check mouse and keyboard if is correctly connected.
• Laser mouse don't work on glass, use mouse pad.
• If is a PS2 mouse – Plug it then restart your computer.
• If is brand new USB type – Plug it then wait for atleast 60 second while the device drivers is being install.
• If is USB type try to connect them into different USB ports. You can try all USB ports.
• If wireless type try to change the batteries.
• Ensure the device is being picked up by receiver.
• Check that receiver has not fallen out of range.

CD ROM won't open

Remove a stuck CD or DVD from an optical drive.
You can do this in laptop and desktop computer.

01 Get a straight wire or paper clip.
02 Look closely at the front panel of your CD ROM.
03 You should see a tiny hole.
04 Push the wire into this little hole.
05 You should feel a bit of resistance.
06 Try to push further.
07 The disc tray will eject slightly.
08 Pull the disc tray into the open position.
09 Remove the disc.

PC auto shutdown or restart

Determine if the problem is cause by hardware failure or software error. If is a hardware problem then here is some possible solution.

• Try to replace thermal paste in your CPU.
• Check if the CPU cooler is correctly connected to motherboard properly and secure.
• Check if the CPU fans is spinning.
• Check if the video card fans is spinning.
• Check if the power supply fans is spinning.
• Replace any faulty computer parts if possible.
• Use larger CPU heatsink.
• Install heat spreader to memory.
• Add more fans with your computer.
