WHAT IS HARD DRIVE
••••••••••
A Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is the main storage device of a computer. It uses disk that are made of aluminum or glass disk known as a platter to store information. The platter is coated in a magnetic medium and rotates at very high speeds, run by an internal motor. Information can be stored permanently, deleted, or written over.

A hard disk drive (HDD) is a data storage device used for storing and retrieving digital information using one or more rigid rapidly rotating disks coated with magnetic material.

The platters are paired with magnetic heads arranged on a moving actuator arm, which read and write data to the platter surfaces.

Data is accessed in a random-access manner, meaning that individual blocks of data can be stored or retrieved in any order rather than sequentially. An HDD retains its data even when powered off.

Today's Common Hard Disk Capacity: 40GB 80GB 120GB 320GB 500GB 750GB Gigabyte up to 1-6TB Terabyte.

Types of HDD:

IDE: Integrated Drive Electronics
• IDE Drives offer 133 MB/sec transfer rate.
• IDE Drives have usually 40 pins. It sends 8 bit data at a time.
• IDE Cables are used to connect IDE HDD.
• Two drives can be connected in a single pata cable. One as master and other as slave. The configuration of master and slave is done by different combination of jumpers in the hdd. IDE drives are also known as Parallel advance technology attachment (PATA).

SATA: Serial advance technology attachment
• SATA Drives offers generally 300MB/sec transfer rate.
• SATA Drives have usually 7 pins, 4 pins in pair of two for sending and receiving data and rest 3 pins are grounded.
• SATA Cables are used to connect SATA HDD.
• Only one drive can be connected in a single sata cable.

SCSI: Small Computer System Interface
• SCSI Drive offers generally 640MB/sec transfer rate.
• SCSI Drives have usually 50 to 68 pins.
• SCSI cables are used to connect SCSI HDD.
• Maximum of 16 drives can be connected in a single scsi cable. Each hdd have a 8 bytes hexadecimal code known as worldwide name (WWN) for its identification in the cable. SCSI is pronounced as scuzzy.

SAS: Serial Attached SCSI
• SAS Drives generally offers 805 MB/sec transfer rate.
• SAS Cables are used to connect SAS Drives.
• Maximum of 128 drives can be connected in a single sas cable.

Hard Disk Drive is also known as: fixed drive, hard drive or disk drive.
