Multimedia refers to content that uses more than one medium. Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer-controlled integration of data, text, photo, audio, video, color, game, animation and any other media where every type of information can be represented, stored, transmitted and processed digitally.

Multimedia is media and content that uses a combination of different content forms. Multimedia includes a combination of text, photo, audio, video, and interactivity content forms. Multimedia is usually recorded and played, displayed or accessed by information content processing devices, such as computerized and electronic devices. Multimedia also describes electronic media devices used to store and experience multimedia content.

Two Multimedia Categories

Linear • Non interactive. does not allow user to have control of the sequence and progress of multimedia content.
Example: animation, television and radio.
Non Linear • Interactive. Allow user to have control of the sequence and progress of multimedia content.
Example: calculator, automated teller machine, website and computer games.

Applications Of Multimedia

Multimedia applications are all around you. Whether you know it or not, chances that you use or interact with one or more multimedia applications daily. If you watch to television, listen to radio, surf the Internet, play video games, or using a automated teller machine, that mean you allready used a multimedia application.

Our society depends on information, and multimedia is an effective way to present it. By providing a more user-friendly interface, multimedia makes information more accessible to the multitudes.

Multimedia finds its application in varios areas including, but not limited to, art, enternainment, education, engineering, government, laboratory, industry, busisess, office and home.

Features

Provides multi-sensory stimulus, creates knowledge connections, provides User control on pace and order, address different learning styles and needs, any sequence of the material, any time and anywhere.

Limitations

Complexity to create, time consuming, ways for direct feedback need to be incorporated.

Multimedia Components

Multimedia refers to the creation of a multi sensory experience to convey messages and ideas. To create this multisensory experience, different multimedia elements are used. The key elements used in most multimedia applications include of text, photo, audio, video, color and animation. Add a participatory environment and you have interactive multimedia.

Uses Of Multimedia

Personal • electronic gadgets for games, studies or e-commerce.
Business • making campaign, promotion and presenting ideas to the clients.
Engineering • scientific reserch, designing a machine or an automobile, making prototypes, modelling and simulation, testing a robot with artificial intelligence, virtual reality or creating objects before using in real world.
