HOW PIXEL MAKE IMAGES
••••••••••
A pixel is the smallest unit of a digital image or graphic that can be displayed and represented on a digital display device. A pixel is the basic logical unit in digital graphics. Pixels are combined to form a complete image, video, text or any visible thing on a computer display. A pixel is also known as a picture element.

A pixel is represented by a dot or square on a computer monitor display screen. Pixels are the basic building blocks of a digital image or display and are created using geometric coordinates. Depending on the graphics card and display monitor, the quantity, size and color combination of pixels varies and is measured in terms of the display resolution.

A pixel or picture element is a little square or tiny dot in a image and the more picture elements inside a image the more clearer the image will become. Below is an example of 20x20 pixel image and zoom in at 300%.

Image Resolution

A image resolution refers to the amount of pixels in the image, it is also refers to the height and width as well as the total amount of pixels in the image. The height and width is measured in pixels as well.

Megapixels

Megapixels (MP) simply means one million pixels and is used when describing digital camera capability. This means that a 3 megapixel image contains approximately 3 million pixels, while an 6 megapixel image contains 6 million pixels.

Since a photo has a rectangular shape, the dimensions of one side aren't equal to the other. If we assume that we're looking at photo in landscape orientation:

EX. A 3 megapixel photo measures 2048 pixels wide by 1536 pixels high
EX. A 6 megapixel photo measures 3008 pixels wide by 2000 pixels high

If you take the width and multiply it by the height, you get the total number of pixels that make up the digital image:

EX. 2048 x 1536 = 3,145,728 pixels = 3 megapixels
EX. 3008 x 2000 = 6,016,000 pixels = 6 megapixels

DPI and PPI

Dots Per Inch (DPI) • how many distinct dots a printing device and render per inch.
Pixels Per Inch (PPI) • the number of pixels in an inch of a screen display device.
