WHAT IS OPTICAL DRIVE
••••••••••
A Optical Disk Drive (ODD) used as a Read Only Memory (ROM) device for a computer system. ROM uses a laser light to read data from or write data to an optical disc. Types of optical drives include CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-RW, and BRD. Some optical drive are Re-Writeable (RW) or burn disc.

An optical drive in a computer system allows you to use CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs to listen to music or watch a movie. Most drives also allow you to write data to a disc, so you can create your own music CDs or create of back-up copy of important data.

An optical drive is usually a CD drive or DVD drive BD drive. Optical means it uses lenses. The drive uses a light called a laser. A laser is the most exact and powerful sort of light but the laser in the drive is very, very small.

The CD or DVD disk is similar to a mirror and the laser light reflects off it. The disk has very small (microscopic) codes written on it. The drive has a very small camera lens beside the laser which can read the codes. Another part of the drive is plugged in to the computer by a wire (inside) and the code goes through the wire as a signal to the computer.

In computing, an optical disc drive (ODD) is a disk drive that uses laser light or electromagnetic waves within or near the visible light spectrum as part of the process of reading or writing data to or from optical discs. Some drives can only read from discs, but recent drives are commonly both readers and recorders, also called burners or writers.

Optical disc drives are an integral part of stand-alone consumer appliances such as CD players, DVD players and DVD recorders. They are also very commonly used in computers to read software and consumer media distributed on disc, and to record discs for archival and data exchange purposes.

Most optical drives can play and/or record onto a large number of different disc formats.

Popular optical drive formats include: CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, BD-R, BD-R DL & TL, BD-RE, BD-RE DL & TL, and BDXL.

Note: Reference your optical drive's manual before purchasing media for your drive to avoid incompatibility issues.

Optical Drive is also known as: Compact Disc (CD) player, Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) player, and Blu-ray disc (BD) player.
